Indian Passport Photo Requirements

Indian Consulates at Chicago, San Francisco and New York have recently started asking for 2x2 inch passport photos. The Indian Embassy at Washington DC also requires 2x2 inch photos. To our information, the Indian Consulate at Houston is the only one that requires 35x35mm sized photos.

For Consulate General of India, Chicago, you will need 2x2 inch passport photos:

Photographs:Four recent color photographs of 2” x 2” against white background showing full frontal view of face are required. Out of these one photograph is to be pasted (do not staple this photo) on the first page of the application in the space provided for the purpose. Photographs with other than white background will not be accepted.

For Consulate General of India, New York, you will need 3 2x2 inch passport photos:

Photographs:Three passport size photographs (size 2 inches x 2 inches with white background)showing frontal view of full face including the one to be pasted on the top of application form;

Comparison: Indian Passport Photo vs USA Passport Picture

1. Passport Photo Size: USA requires Passport photos to be around 2 inch x 2 inch which is around 50mm x 50 mm. On the other hand, most Indian consulates in the USA require passport photos for Indian Passport application/renewal to be of the size of 35mm Vs 35 mm. 2. Face size inside photo: USA passport photo requires the face size between 1" and 1 3/8". While on the other hand, compared to the photo size, Indian Consulates in the USA require the face to fill in around 70% to 80% of the photo.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Four recently taken and identical color photographs of size 3.5x3.5 cm showing front view of full face against light background in civilian clothes taken in a studio (Polaroid photographs, poor quality photographs and photographs with dark glasses or uniform are not accepted) should be submitted along with the application.  One photograph should be affixed on the box and the remaining photographs should be kept in n envelope and attached to the application.

Looks like the Embassy at DC has changed the info on their webpage. Now they do not mention specific size for the photos they need. Some of our customers are reporting that they ask for 2x2 inch photos now.
